Living from a Place of Surrender – Michael Singer 8 Week Course Review

Surrender – huh?

Some of you may find yourself reading this blog because you may be asking yourself the following important questions:

What does it mean to surrender?

Why surrender?

How do you really surrender? or

What does it mean if you are living from a place of surrender?

This article is essentially a review of the Michael Singer 8 Week Course, Living from a Place of Surrender.  But before I get into that, I want to provide a little personal background which has prompted me to review this course.  If that’s not for you, skip down to the review below.

Falling off the Rat Wheel of Life

We all go through difficult times and I am no exception.  The catalyst for change for me though was when I found myself saying “I can’t do this anymore”.

What exactly did I mean by that?  I meant, I couldn’t continue to chase and push and achieve/acquire, feel good fleetingly and then find myself still wanting more, dissatisfied and basically unhappy and repeating the same process over and over and ultimately feeling the same way.

No thing or person, nor myself was ever going to be good enough according to my mind.  But I didn’t know that at the time.  All I knew that time round was that I was physically and emotionally tired after years and years on the wheel and I felt empty.  And, I had to get off – actually I just fell off.

This took me down the path of exploring concepts such as presence, awareness, enlightenment, surrender and acceptance (I gave up the fight) and I began to be conscious.

This changed my concept of who I am and subsequently my life.

And so, it is from this space that I wish to share my thoughts regarding the Living from a Place of Surrender online course in the hope that you to will learn and experience the transformative power that surrender can have within you, on your life and your experience of life.

You can decide to get off before you fall off!

About the Teacher

Michael A. Singer has been a spiritual teacher for more than four decades and has written two books: the #1 New York Times bestseller The Untethered Soul and the New York Times bestseller The Surrender Experiment. In 1971, Michael experienced a deep inner awakening and went into seclusion, focusing on yoga and meditation. In 1975, he founded the yoga and meditation center known as Temple of the Universe, where people have come together to practice and study ever since.

Aim of the course

The course description opens with the assertion that you will learn that trying to achieve happiness by “getting what you want” is actually limiting your happiness and that you end up struggling with life instead of experiencing it.

It is then stated that true happiness comes only when your inner energy is free to flow and that unhampered flow is the goal of the course.

The overview also states that the most effective personal growth technique is to use life to remove your inner blockages, not compensate for them.

You will also learn about your true relationship to the world unfolding around you and to the thoughts and emotions arising within you. But most importantly, you will come into touch with the real “you”—the indwelling consciousness that is witnessing it all.

My thoughts:  I can certainly relate to the statement that trying to achieve happiness by getting what you want doesn’t contribute to happiness and that one’s life can still feel like a struggle even when or after you get it.  And yes, not trying to compensate or I like to say ‘fix’ your inner blockages comes from a place of ease (flow) which I’m all about.  Getting in touch with the ‘real you’ is where it is at!  So, this is a reassuring starting point.

The paradox is, is that once you begin to surrender you actually get more of what you want and realise though that your happiness in not dependent on it.

Course Inclusions

Benefits

  • Freedom from struggle
  • Clarity and Calm
  • Spontaneous Joy
  • Harmony in Relationships
  • Energetic Renewal
  • Creative Inspiration

My thoughts:  Yes, I can say that I have experienced all of these as a consequence of getting in touch with my being (the real you) and a growing awareness of my thoughts and emotions.

Endorsements

The Living from a Place of Surrender is endorsed by the likes of Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield and Deepak Chopra.

Final thoughts – Liberation & Contentment

The course has been developed and is delivered by a reputable and credible teacher.  The endorsements of other leading teachers whether in similar or different fields supports this statement.

The course approach is valid and hits on crucial points for consciousness and transforming one’s life e.g. having an awareness of one’s emotions and thoughts, surrender, being in flow, freedom from pushing to achieve, and in going beyond the overactive mind (that creates suffering and struggle) to access the real you where liberation and sustainable contentment lies.

One final positive is that for every course that is sold they will give one course to a person in an under served community.  I like that!

The course cost is a small price to pay for what can be a profound and sustained change.

Hi Martine! I always pay attention to endorsements and I’m glad to see this teacher has a good reputation.

One of my goals for this year 2020 has been to develop awareness of my emotions and thoughts. And this course seems to deal with this. I’m glad I read your post and am grateful I found this course. Thank you!

    • Martine

Thanks Paolo. Yes awareness is key because once this grows we can see the affect of our thoughts on our experience of life and wellbeing. Without this, we will continue to live the same way. I would love to hear how you get on with the course. Thankyou for your feedback.

The concept of being fed up of running on the hamster wheel is very relatable. I’ve heard nothing but the good about Michael and his amazing ability to help people find simplicity in a very complex society. The society that makes us seek contentment and happiness in material possessions. I think I could really use this. As you mentioned, it is probably best to get off, before you fall off.

    Thanks for sharing

    • Martine

Yes if one can get off before they fall off that is great but most of the time it can take something major. I think this is changing though as people become more aware of the mind and how it controls us and how we can learn to master this.  And yes, material possessions are fine as long as we’re not dependent on them for our happiness or sense of well-being.   I would encourage you to give living from a place of surrender it a go if you are ready. Thanks for your feedback.

Thank you a million for this exceptional insight into happiness, permit me to share my personal experience.
I lost my job some years ago and felt I will never be happy again. But later I discovered that my job was just an object and not me.
Right from my inside, I started doing what I love doing best and gradually joy and fulfillment came in.
I live my life on my poultry farm and work as a freelancer without walls, it has been awesome. It is a choice to be happy.

    • Martine

Yes, it is a choice. Sometimes we need to learn how. The mind is a powerful thing and if we don’t have the tools it can drag us down even if we have the best intentions. So, it helps to learn how and why this happens and then strategies to eliminate its power over us. I’m glad that you had that insight ‘that your job wasn’t you’. Exactly!   And I’m glad your life and how you feel as a result of a change in your thoughts is awesome now. Sometimes what we think is a terrible thing (like losing your job) ends up being the very thing that creates the change and leads to something wonderful. Thankyou for sharing your experience.

    Martine,

Surrender certainly evokes thoughts of giving up or yielding to someone. The thought of giving up control of oneself is foreign to me. This course is fascinating. Surrendering allows your inner energy to flow and that unhampered flow can lead to happiness. An interesting concept indeed. Thank you for this enlightening review.

    JR

    • Martine

Hi JR, it’s not so much giving up as it is letting go of attachment or identification with our thoughts that lead to unhappiness and suffering and tapping into who we really are.  We actually then have greater control.  Our thoughts and words etc then lead to much more positive outcomes for us.  Thank you for your comment.
